Department of Allergology and Immunology - Bughadze Lali

Allergy is an exaggerated immune system reaction to a substance known as an allergen.

An allergen is a foreign substance (for example: dust or animal fur) that is harmless to non-allergic individuals. In hypersensitivity, or when you have an allergy, the immune system attempts to fight against it just as it would against an infection or virus.

The immune system produces a protein (antibody) to fight the allergen. As a result, symptoms may appear, which can range from mild to significantly pronounced. Allergy can disrupt daily life and, in some cases, lead to a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Allergic diseases include:

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis, including hay fever
  • Acute and idiopathic urticaria
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Allergic conjunctivitis
  • Food and drug allergies
  • Angioneurotic edema
  • Anaphylactic reaction

Symptoms of allergy include:

  • Coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath
  • Sneezing, itching of the nose
  • Nasal discharge and congestion
  • Skin rash, itching, peeling
  • Redness, burning, and itching of the eyes

Food and drug allergies, as well as insect sting allergies, can cause symptoms such as:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Rash
