Microbiology Laboratory

Head of the Microbiology Laboratory - Tinatin Meshkishvili

The Microbiology and Bacteriology Laboratory is equipped with the following:

  • Thermo Fischer PCR
  • Quant Studio5 Real-Time PCR
  • BioMeriux Bacteriological Analyzer Vitek2 Compact
  • Sperm Quality Analyzer (SQA-V)

Modern technologies ensure the accuracy, speed, and high reliability of the results obtained. The undeniable advantage of PCR is its quantitative analysis, which not only enables the detection of infectious agents and microorganisms in biological samples but also allows their precise qualitative and quantitative determination.

The laboratory conducts:

  • Diagnosis of upper respiratory tract diseases, purulent-inflammatory processes, and the microbiota responsible for viral, fungal, and infectious pathologies.
  • Bacteriological examination of various biological samples: urine, sputum, urethral and urogenital swabs, prostate secretions, pus, exudates from wound samples, and discharge fluids, cerebrospinal fluid, identification and bacterial examination of blood sterility (microbial identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing).

  • Detection of A + B group influenza viruses in nasopharyngeal swabs, high-risk types of human papillomavirus, Mycoplasma hominis, Chlamydia trachomatis, hepatitis C and B viruses, and their genotyping using real-time PCR.

  • Study of gastrointestinal tract microbiota, Helicobacter antigens, rotavirus-adenoviruses, enteroviruses, hemorrhagic Escherichia coli VT-1+VT-2, Clostridium difficile A+B toxins, and detection of Yersinia enterocolitica in fecal matter.

  • Calprotectin and occult blood tests, study of pathological intestinal flora and dysbiosis.

  • Semen analysis – quantitative and qualitative examination of sperm, as well as bacteriological analysis of seminal fluid.

The Clinical Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory is the educational base for the Tbilisi State Medical University residency program in "Laboratory Medicine.
